AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY
Barry Alexander Brown is a filmmaker and writer from Montgomery, Alabama. He is British born but grew up in the deep south where his mother’s family has lived since immigrating to America in the seventeenth century. He began his career in the movie industry with a feature length documentary about the anti-Vietnam war movement titled, The War at Home. As producer/director of the film, Barry received an Academy Award nomination. He is best known as a film editor. Working with his longtime friend, Spike Lee, he has cut many of Spike’s most successful movies including, Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, Crooklyn, He Got Game, Summer of Sam, 25th Hour, Inside Man, Blackkklansman and most recently, Highest2Lowest. He received his second Oscar nomination as the editor of Blackkklansman. He has also worked closely with acclaimed Indian director, Mira Nair. He cut her groundbreaking feature Salaam Bombay, which was also nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. He worked again with Mira on The Laughing Club of India, Monsoon Wedding, and Queen of Katwe. Recently, Barry directed Fasting and The Longevity Revolution, a documentary based on the work of world-renowned scientist, Dr. Valter Longo.
Barry wrote the screenplay for a feature film that he also directed titled, Son of the South, shot in his hometown of Montgomery. He has written a script for a dark fantasy movie that will be shot in Italy, to be released in 2026. Wind is Barry’s first novel. He is completing the next books of the trilogy, The Un-Winding and The Only Way Back.
Barry spends his time these days between his New York City apartment and his home in St. Rémy de Provence, France.
